Stevie's Story

(24x36) Black and Grey Tattoo, Mixed Media on Metal

Stevie exuded joy, and when I was with her, I could tell that she was aware of who she was and what she wanted from life. Discovering your true self never comes easy. Stevie had to challenge social, religious, and family norms to become the person who stands with us today.

Much of her adult life consisted of a process of “unbecoming” and BECOMING herself, as she expressed in her She Warrior submission. Stevie resisted societal programming and understood that as a woman, she is much more than that. To name a few, she is an artist, a priestess, a nurse, polyamorous, and a nonbinary individual. Quote (from She Warrior submission) by Stevie: Most of my adult life has been a series of unbecoming...I have fought free to become myself…

Bird: Southern, yellow-billed hornbill

I knew instantly the bird for Stevie was the Hornbill. The bird takes up space in the world, demanding your attention with its unique look and beautiful yellow bill. When I see the Southern, yellow-billed hornbill, I can’t help but smile. It represents all the layers and essence of being. She is far more than she may seem. (Written by Naomi)
