Sebastian's Story

(24x36) Black and Grey Tattoo, Mixed Media on Metal

You might be wondering, “Why is a guy part of this incredible art project?” The answer is simple. I grew up surrounded by strong women who showed me what resilience and leadership looks like. I connected deeply with the She-Warrior project because of the powerful examples I’ve seen firsthand. I was raised by women who never labeled themselves as feminists but as people who led with respect and integrity. Similarly, I do not define myself as a feminist, not because I’m against it, but because my upbringing taught me to appreciate all forms of strength and leadership as something natural and undeniable.

Women haven’t always had it easy, and I have witnessed sexism from both genders. To me, Women have always been symbols of leadership; in my culture, with the Taino women who fought and hunted alongside the men; in my family, through my grandmothers, aunts, my mother, and my sister; and even in my friend group.

While many people view women as fragile, weak, or shy, I see them as resilient, capable, and commanding respect. My mom has always been a fighter. She works in the art field and as a skilled welder, both of which are challenging and demanding professions, especially for a woman. Her presence has always been commanding, a quiet strength that speaks volumes. She taught me to pursue my dreams with relentless passion, showing me that toughness and resilience are essential to succeed in any field.

The women in my family align with my belief that true leadership comes from strength of character, not gender. It’s a reminder that respect and equality should be universal values, not just feminist ideals. It’s not just about uplifting women but about recognizing the person next to you, regardless of gender, and valuing their strength, character, and humanity. To me, the She Warrior project isn’t just about redefining what it means to be a strong woman; It’s about reshaping how we all view strength, leadership, and respect for all people.

Bird: Short Eared Owl

Getting to know Sebastian reveals not just his passion but also an incredible depth of empathy that draws people in. He brims with surprises, unique personalities, love, and undeniable charisma. His remarkable ability to evoke laughter in anyone—even when they might not feel like it—is truly special. In my quest to find a bird that mirrors his charm, I found that numerous amazing species fit the bill. I wanted Sebastian to grasp that he embodies the legacy of a warrior, and the owl stands out as the perfect symbol for this. The short-eared owl is a remarkable creature; unlike many others, it builds nests, thrives on islands, and roams wide-open grasslands—traits that are exceptionally rare among owls! By choosing this magnificent bird, we can truly celebrate Sebastian's unique qualities and the spirit of a warrior he carries within.
