Amanda's Story
(24x36) Black and Grey Tattoo, Mixed Media on Metal

Through the course of my life, I have been very lucky to be raised by women such as my grandmother and mom who were always strong, outspoken, and bold in personality despite social pressure during their upbringing to be more agreeable and submissive. These two women taught me core values on standing up for myself and autonomy through their own displays of strength amidst adversity. Despite the bold personalities I had modeled for me in my upbringing, my personality always tended to be a bit more calm, compromising, and agreeable. I struggled with feeling strong in comparison to these two women who epitomized strength growing up, as I didn’t feel like I fit the mold of what a strong woman looked like. However, through both the love and acceptance of these women who raised me as well my own growth and exploration of what it is to be a woman in our current society through my art, I have come to feel empowered in who I am even if I look different from the women who raised me in certain ways. It is through my own growth toward self-acceptance as well as finding my own voice in bringing up gender dynamics within our current society in my art that I have grown to feel like I am just as much a warrior as my mother and grandmother. Bird: Stellars Jay
From the moment I met Amanda, I felt a deep connection and knew the perfect bird I wanted to share with her: the Stellar's Jay. This magnificent bird, one of my personal favorites, can be found along the West Coast. I remember my encounters with them vividly, particularly during my visits to the beautiful Pacific Northwest in Washington State. These jays are cautious, preferring not to engage with just anyone, yet they possess a curious nature that draws them out to learn about those who enter their environment. The vibrant blue of their feathers is truly eyecatching, complemented by their elegant, regal black crests. They evoke a sense of admiration and warmth, making each sighting memorable.
